Glutathione is a small molecule composed of three amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. Unlike vitamin C or vitamin E, which must be obtained from food, glutathione is produced internally, mainly in the liver. It exists in nearly every cell in your body, with particularly high concentrations in the liver. There, it plays a crucial role in neutralizing toxins and supporting Phase II detoxification pathways.


However, glutathione production can fall short of demand. Factors such as chronic stress, poor sleep, a diet low in sulfur-containing foods, exposure to environmental toxins, and aging can deplete your glutathione reserves faster than your body can replenish them.


The Research-Backed Benefits



1. Supports Healthy Aging at the Cellular Level


Recent research from Baylor College of Medicine highlights glutathione's role in healthy aging. In a randomized clinical trial, older adults received a combination of glycine and N-acetylcysteine, known as GlyNAC. This combination serves as a precursor for glutathione production. After 16 weeks, participants showed corrected glutathione deficiency and improvements in oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and other aging markers. They also experienced better physical function and reduced inflammation.


This is significant because oxidative stress and mitochondrial decline are well-established drivers of age-related diseases. Supporting your body’s natural glutathione production may be a direct way to address both issues simultaneously.


Glutathione is made every day inside our cells and protects them from harmful oxidative stress. However, in older individuals, glutathione levels are often low, while oxidative stress levels are high.

2. Plays a Role in Healthy Blood Sugar Regulation


A clinical trial published in FEMS Microbiology Letters examined long-term oral glutathione supplementation in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Participants took 500 mg of glutathione daily for six months. Researchers measured the effects on gut microbiome composition and metabolic markers. The study found that long-term glutathione use increased the body’s glutathione stores and stabilized glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a key marker of long-term blood sugar control.


Additionally, the study noted a significant reduction in 8-OHdG, a marker of oxidative DNA damage, in the supplemented group. This finding aligns with a broader theme in functional medicine: oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction are often interconnected, and addressing one can support the other.


3. Supports Vascular Health and Blood Flow


Two studies highlight glutathione’s role in cardiovascular and endothelial function, especially when combined with the amino acid L-citrulline.


In a study involving postmenopausal women, researchers compared citrulline alone to a combination of citrulline and glutathione. Postmenopausal women often experience endothelial dysfunction due to oxidative stress, contributing to heightened blood pressure responses. The combination group showed improvements in endothelial function and blood pressure reactivity beyond what citrulline alone provided. This suggests that glutathione’s antioxidant activity helps blood vessels respond more effectively to stress.


Another study examined the same combination in trained young men for exercise performance. After eight days of supplementation, researchers observed enhanced blood flow and increased citrulline and arginine plasma concentrations following high-intensity exercise. While more research is needed on performance outcomes, the underlying vascular mechanisms supporting nitric oxide availability are well-documented.

Glutathione touches several of these root causes: detoxification capacity, mitochondrial health, immune regulation, and inflammation.
