What Is Direct Primary Care and How Does It Work?
MorningStar Integrative Health | Jacksonville, FL
Healthcare the way it should be — personal, direct, and built around you.
MorningStar Integrative Health is founded as a Direct Primary Care office. But what exactly is it? And how is it different from what you've experienced before? Let's break it all down.
The Simple Definition
Direct Primary Care is a membership-based healthcare model that gives you unlimited access to your provider for a flat monthly fee — no copays, no deductibles, no surprise bills, and no insurance middleman standing between you and your care.
Instead of paying per visit and navigating endless insurance paperwork, you pay one predictable monthly membership fee. In return, you get real, unhurried access to your provider — whether that's an in-person visit, a phone call, a text, or a same-day appointment when something unexpected comes up.
THINK OF IT THIS WAY, DPC is like having a trusted family doctor who actually knows your name, your history, and your goals — and who has the time to act like it. Not a 10-minute slot on an overbooked calendar, but a genuine healthcare relationship.
How Does Direct Primary Care Work?
Getting started with DPC is simple. Here's how the model works in practice at MorningStar:
1. Choose a membership Pick the plan that fits your life — individual, adult 36+, or couples. Membership fees are transparent, predictable, and kept deliberately affordable. |
2. Get direct access to your provider Once you're a member, you can reach your provider directly — by phone, text, or secure message — without going through a receptionist gatekeeping chain. |
3. Be seen when you need it Same-day and next-day appointments are the norm, not the exception. After-hours care is available when you need it most. |
4. Access medications and labs at wholesale cost We can often help you get medications and lab work at dramatically reduced cash-pay prices — another benefit of cutting out the insurance middlemen. |
5. Keep your other insurance if you have it DPC is not insurance and doesn't replace it. It works beautifully alongside your existing coverage for hospitalizations, specialist visits, or imaging needs. |
DPC vs. Traditional Insurance-Based Care
The differences aren't subtle. Here's a side-by-side look:
Feature | Direct Primary Care | Traditional Insurance |
Cost structure | ✓ Flat monthly membership | ✗ Premiums + copays + deductibles |
Appointment availability | ✓ Same/next day | ✗ Days to weeks of waiting |
Visit length | ✓ As long as you need | ✗ Typically 10–15 minutes |
After-hours access | ✓ Yes — direct contact | ✗ Usually on-call strangers or urgent care |
Surprise bills | ✓ None | ✗ Common |
Paperwork burden | ✓ Minimal | ✗ Extensive |
Continuity of care | ✓ Same provider every visit | ✗ Often varies |
What's Included in a DPC Membership?
At MorningStar Integrative Health, your membership covers far more than a standard checkup. You get access to:
Primary and urgent care visits — unlimited, for any reason. Sick? Injured? Managing a chronic condition? Just need to talk through a concern? That's all covered.
Integrative and functional medicine support — we blend traditional medicine with holistic and functional strategies, building a plan around your whole person — not just your symptoms.
Women's health care and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) — because we understand that hormonal health affects everything, and women deserve more than a 15-minute appointment to sort it out.
Wholesale medications and discounted labs — when available, we pass savings directly to you by arranging cash-pay options that bypass inflated insurance pricing.
Red Light Therapy — available to members as part of our integrative approach, and also open to non-members looking for targeted wellness support.
Who Is DPC Right For?
💼 Busy professionals who can't take half a day off for a 10-minute visit
👨👩👧 Parents tired of long waits in urgent care with sick kids
📋 People with high-deductible plans who pay out-of-pocket for most primary care anyway
🌿 Anyone who wants integrative, functional, or holistic approaches to their health
💊 People managing ongoing conditions who need a real relationship with their provider
🔓 Those who value medical freedom and want to make informed choices about their care
WHO DPC IS NOT FOR DPC isn't the best fit if you rarely seek care (only once every few years) or if you want your insurance company to direct all of your healthcare decisions. It's also not a substitute for hospital care, specialist visits, or major procedures — which is exactly why we always recommend keeping some form of coverage for those needs.
Does DPC Replace Insurance?
No — and this is important to understand. Direct Primary Care is not insurance. It's a membership that covers the cost of access to your primary care provider. We do not bill insurance, and we don't accept it for visits.
What DPC does is take the most frequently needed healthcare — the everyday primary care, urgent needs, and ongoing management — and make it far more accessible and affordable. For anything beyond that (hospitalizations, major surgeries, specialist care), you'd still want traditional insurance, a health sharing plan, or another coverage model working alongside your DPC membership.
Many of our patients use DPC alongside a high-deductible plan or a health cost-sharing membership. The DPC handles the day-to-day, and the insurance is there as a backstop for the big, unexpected things.
The MorningStar Approach: Integrative + Direct
What makes MorningStar Integrative Health different isn't just the DPC model — it's the philosophy behind it. We practice integrative medicine, which means we bring together traditional and functional or holistic approaches based on what each patient actually needs.
We're not going to give everyone the same protocol. We're going to partner with you, understand your history, your lifestyle, your goals, and your values — and build a care plan around those things. We honor medical freedom. We believe you deserve to be an informed participant in your own healthcare, not a passive recipient of it.
That's what “rooted in relationships” means to us.
